The challenges of running my own business, which I have never done before, are greater than I ever imagined. This group is something that I need so badly to help me and guide me to become a successful business in Whistler. Any knowledge that Sue Adams can pass on is priceless. -Keri Earnshaw, Whistler Therapeutics Inc., Whistler BC-

Sandy Herle has played many different roles in her community; from President of the Rotary Club of Parksville to Mayor of Parksville, it seems as if she’s done it all! However, when Herle speaks about her business experience, it’s easy to see that of her many accomplishments being a successful entrepreneur is the one of which she’s most proud.
For Herle, self-employment started in 1971 when she opened Pedal Pusher Bicycles Ltd. with her partner. In 1991, it became time for her to move on to her next endeavor, Close To You Ltd.
“I was looking for something feminine to do after so many years in a typically male dominated business, so we opened originally as a lingerie boutique after I sold my shares in the bicycle store,” says Herle. “The store has grown to triple the size it was when we first started it and has evolved into a ladies boutique!”
A big part of Herle’s success has been her belief that a business is only as strong as its community. As well as being on more than half a dozen committees and boards, she also gives back through product and cash donations from her business. She is a true champion of her community.
Adding one more volunteer activity to her list this year, Herle will be facilitating a Peer Mentoring Group in Parksville to help local entrepreneurs who are new to business. She’s learned many important lessons from her own mentors and is now eager to offer assistance to others.
“All of the people who have advised and guided me through my life and my business have taught me to call on others when I need assistance. There are times when you just need to talk to someone about a problem,” says Herle. “My mentors have enabled me to grow in confidence as my business grew in size. When a mentor gives from her background and experience, it’s almost like getting the education without having to go to school!”
