It's your business. Start. Grow. Succeed.

The challenges of running my own business, which I have never done before, are greater than I ever imagined. This group is something that I need so badly to help me and guide me to become a successful business in Whistler. Any knowledge that Sue Adams can pass on is priceless. -Keri Earnshaw, Whistler Therapeutics Inc., Whistler BC-

Natanis Desjarlais

Nitanis Desjarlais, a natural storyteller, started Shape Shyphter Studios in 2003 with a vision to bring other people’s stories to life through the lens of a camera in documentary films.

“I just knew instinctively that this was something I could be good at; my artistic ability to tell a story visually is my greatest strength,” says Desjarlais. “Now the best part of being self-employed is that I’m able to work closely with First Nations and to do meaningful work within my community by preserving knowledge for the next generations.”

Word quickly spread about Desjarlais’s ability to bring a vision into reality on the big screen; she has successfully produced over 35 videos, from documentaries and educational films to interactive and promotional features. Through her business, Desjarlais provides full video production services from pre-production to post-production as well as training and facilitation for others looking to learn more about film.

It’s that enthusiasm for sharing knowledge that made her become a mentor with Women's Enterprise Centre.

“Mentors are essential at the start of your business and I wouldn’t be where I am today without that guidance and support,” says Desjarlais. “My mother was a mentor to me: she taught me to believe in myself and helped guide my career by supporting me as a young mother and giving me my first camera.”

What appeals most to Desjarlais about mentoring is the chance to share her personal experiences and knowledge to help new entrepreneurs succeed. She knows that the Peer Mentoring Group will allow women who are starting a business an opportunity to connect and support one another.
